3 races, 2 days....who wouldn't
Me, that's who. I will straight up admit that for the longest time I thought I would never subject myself to such a gimmicky challenge. I mean what is the point of even attempting a 10k (6.2 miles) race, followed up by a 5k (3.1 miles) race, followed by a full marathon 26.2 miles the very next day? How would one propose to even run a half way respectable 5k after racing a 10k? Heck, I'm not even brave enough for a 5k when that's the only distance to be raced. I have been brave enough to tackle the 10k, and while I'm not going to Worlds in the 10k anytime soon, I can hold my own. But to race a 10k and turn right around to race a 5k, that's certifiably loony. And now to run a solid marathon the very next day? Seriously, who would do that to themselves? That's...that's Ultra Loony! Well, staring down the barrel of turning 40 will make you do things you swore you would never do. So, yes I will be participating in this ultra level of lunacy. (I will turn the big 4-0, 5 days after the 2017 Twin Cities Marathon, well God willing....)
Here is where I will log my journey to the 2017 Twin Cities in Motion Ultra Loony Challenge. I am being guided in my training by one of my best-friends, who has outright won the challenge in the past. My training plan is all put together and the new training cycle begins Sunday, July 2nd. To be honest, even starting another intense training cycle now is Ultra Loony. I began training for my 2017 season back in November of 2016 due to wanting to experience the full training plan as written and published by the fine folks at the B.A.A., in preparation to run my 3rd Boston Marathon this past April. Boston is always amazing, but I did not have a great race, (foot issues popped up during the race...4th time will be the charm, right?) I then had another marathon planned just shy of a month after Boston, this was the Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon, and that was where I took my first ever dnf (did not finish). I was in the wrong kind of pain,so I pulled the plug at mile 20. It was heartbreaking, but I know I made the right decision. I was able to fix the issue and turned around just another month later and ran my 3rd best marathon ever at the 2017 Grandma's Marathon (3:30:47) (My pr is 3:18:48). So now I am putting all of that behind me to find out what more I can do with my running.
I hope you will enjoy taking this journey with me. I am planning on sharing about my training here a few times a week and we have basically 14 weeks till we find out if this all is in-fact the horrible idea I still kind of think it is. ;)
See you on the trails!
